Preliminary Task

Evaluation
My preliminary task was called "The French Trip" in this clip I used the actresses Amber Bush and Beth Bouchareb. The conversation they had was about the french trip that Amber was going on. I used the music which was Madonna- holiday to suit this theme.

The negatives of my preliminary task are that when I went out and began filming my piece I was finished within half an hour. I then came back to media and began editing my work. This is when I noticed that the conversation I had filmed did not flow and the volume of the conversation was not loud enough. This was because the noise of the canteen where it was filmed was too loud which was over powering the conversation. To resolve this problem I gathered the actresses I used and went back out and filmed the conversation again. This time it was much better and this was shown through the flow of the conversation when I came to editing it and the volume where I could hear the conversation other the  sounds in the canteen.

The positives of my preliminary task are that in my clip I followed the brief as I filmed Amber walking through a door, having a conversation with Beth using shot reverse shot and the 180 degrees rule. The filming also included different shot types and title pages with music to make the clip look professional. I feel that my editing process when really well and there was no major problems that occurred.

Initial thoughts of horror film openings

The film genre I have chosen to do for my media film opening is horror. This is because horror is one of my faveroite film genre's. Also it has a lot of elements in that can bring out creativity as there is so many things I can include for example sound, credits and colours. Horror also has plenty of film opening examples that I can evaluate and be inspired by for ideas.

.

This horror film opening is the beginning of the film "The Ring" in this opening it is differet to normal openings this is because it doesnt include a title of the film, film credits or music. However the silence and intense conversation that the two girls are having make the film just as powerful. It also sets a scarey mood to it which slowly reveals questions that the audience want to know answers to. One being if this tape is real?. In my film opening I will be including credits and music. But this opening gives me ideas on how to gradually set the story line without revealing what happens. Lastly this opening does use sound effects that are sharp noises for when for example the phone rings this is to make the phone ringing more intense and frightening for the audience.

This film opening is from the begining of the film "Saw" this film opening includes credits which appear straight away. The font that they are in relate to the genre of horror and is something I am going to use. There is also creepy and intense music in the background which builds up and up this is to set the haunting mood to prepare the audience. The pictures that are being displayed are items of weapons this indicates that this film will invovle these which promotes danger. The added blood is appropiate to the genre and is a popular element to have in horror films. At the end of the film opening there is a fuzzy T.V which then shows the title of the film which is "Saw" this is better than just using a title as it includes added sound affects of the broken cables of the t.v which builds the tension even more. This opening sequence includes all the elements I will use in mine other than I will use acting aswell.

Live Type work diary

Today I used the digital technology of live type. This program is to create title pages that can be used for my own film opening. I created two title pages one was for the start of the clip and the other was for the ending.
The fist title page I did I found very challenging because it was the first time I had explored and created a live type title page. I began to watch the utube clip showing me how to use the program and followed there steps just to get started. Firstly I typed my title which was "journey to friendship"this was in the box underneath all the settings. I then changed the size, tracking and leading to fit my title page and to create less space in-between the words. Next I chose a bold font type and used the texture to apply a background in the font. I then started to explore even further and added a effect to my font which was a bounce effect coming inwards. To make the title page look even more creative I chose an illusional background which showed a journey going through the whirl this was to fit my title. Lastly I applied another sub title which was "Filmed by Amelia Barrett" this was to make the title page more realistic.

The second title page I created was for the ending of a film clip. This one I found much easier as i knew where everything was and how to use it. I used a christmas theme for this one. I also used the title which had crayon around it and a snowflake background to fit this theme. The colours were very bright and the effect I used on the title was where the crayon boxes were being drawn. This was to give the title page a children audience.

Preliminary Plan

Evaluation

In this evaluation I am going to be stating the improvements that are needed in my clip to make this clip to a standard that could be compared to real video clips that are published. The changes that I need to make are going to be made to make my clip the best that it can be. This plan will hugely help me when shooting my real preliminary task as then I can learn from my mistakes and achieve a new clip which will hi-light the improvements and difference of quality between both of the clips.

  • The improvements I need to make for when I do my real preliminary task are that I need to make it clearer what direction Amber is walking in. This is because I start of with a medium long shot with her facing the camera (0.05). Then i change the camera angle to a shot of Amber behind (0.08). This creates the clip to be very confusing as it looks like she is walking away from the door then towards the door. To improve this I need to make the direction of Amber walking much clearer by choosing different camera shots to show this.

  • Another improvement I need to make is the travelling when Amber is walking to meet Nathan at the table. These shots were very mixed up. This is because after Amber had walked through the door then I went straight to a shot from Amber behind which was a extreme medium shot (0.28)  and then I jumped to her almost at the table which was a medium long shot (0.32) I didn't make it clear to my viewers where Amber was travelling to therefore when i shoot this again I will make sure the table is in the shot. Also I will keep to the right side of Amber and this will make it easier for the viewers to understand that Amber is walking in one direction to the table.

  • Also when Amber finally gets to the table I used a medium shot (0.37) to show her pulling out the chair. The frame work of this shot was correct. However Nathan wasn't sitting on the chair opposite this would confuse the viewers therefore when I film this clip I will make sure that Nathan is sitting opposite ready to have the conversation shoot with Amber.

  • When the conversation shots takes place in all three shot reverse shot camera shots (0.49) (0.52) (0.56) whether its Nathan or Amber I have taken the frozen camera shot where there head is to big and takes up to much space therefore leaving hardly any space for the viewer to see Nathan or Amber's expressions. Therefore when I film this again I will make sure that the closer image is of the person who is facing the camera and the other person who has there head directing opposite the camera much smaller and taking up less space.

  • Lastly I will change the bright orange background to a more suttle colour this will be improved to make the clip look more realistic and take the attention of off the start and ending and more on what is happening and the action of the clip.
